Chitral Somapala

Chitral "Chity" Somapala is a Sri Lankan-born vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and film music composer, widely credited with bringing rock and heavy metal to Sri Lankan audiences. His 1998 recording "Nadee Ganga" became a national classic still heard across radio, TV and talent shows today.

In Europe he has fronted the German bands Avalon and Red Circuit, the Greek metal band Firewind and the British band Power Quest, and co-founded Civilization One. Tours have placed him on stages supporting Metallica, Motörhead, Uriah Heep and HammerFall, and he has performed as a solo singer with the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra.

As a film composer he has worked with directors including Asoka Handagama and Chandran Ratnam, winning the Signis Award (2017) and the Presidential Award (2019) for Best Male Singer for "Aharenna". He taught vocals and bass at music schools in Trier, Germany for over a decade, and is now based in Västerås, Sweden.
